In the congested truck market, it can be hard to determine which model fits your needs best—and the first step in your shopping doesn’t begin with the brand or model you should choose. Instead, you need to explore what you’ll use your truck for and then start looking at the various brands. If you’re unsure or want your new truck to fit a variety of needs, you’ll need to choose one that is both powerful with outstanding performance, comfortable, and convenient. While that might seem like a tall order, we think you can find the perfect match when you shop with our team at LaFontaine Chevrolet Buick GMC of St. Clair, your local used GMC dealer.

First, much like GMC, the LaFontaine Automotive Group has been in the industry for years. During that time, we’ve helped many of our community members find the vehicle that can successfully get them from point A to point B and everywhere in between. Second, you’ll find that our team is friendly and knowledgeable, willing to answer any questions you might have to help you narrow your selection. Third, we have a large inventory of GMC Sierras in stock—and although we might be biased, we think the Sierra is one of the most well-rounded trucks in its class.

What Makes the Sierra 1500 So Great?

GMC is one of the longest-running brands in the American auto industry, and its ability to craft a truck that is powerful, efficient, and functional is well documented. Regarding the GMC Sierra, it was introduced in 1988, along with its sibling in the truck world, the Chevy Silverado. Even though the two were built on the same platform, the Sierra quickly stood out thanks to its two-tone painted exterior.

The first generation of the Sierra ran for 12 years, improving and adapting to consumers’ demands with each passing year. When the second generation arrived, it was built on a brand-new platform and offered a variety of cab sizes and bed lengths in its quest to continue meeting those demands.

Today, the GMC Sierra is in its fifth generation, which started in 2019. When looking for a used option, it’s hard to beat this latest version, especially when you take a closer look at everything it offers.

Power and Performance

Even if you’re not using your truck for work, you still want it to rank highly when it comes to power and performance. After all, the ability to do big things is one of the main reasons drivers choose a truck—and believe us when we say that you can certainly do big things behind the wheel of a Sierra. First, you have your choice of engine options. In fact, the Sierra offers more engine options than any other truck in its class. When shopping the fifth generation, however, you will find that both the 4.3L V6 and the 5.3L V8 were cut from the lineup starting in 2022.

You’ll also find that the Sierra 1500 can tow up to 13,200 lbs and maintain a payload capacity of up to 2,240 lbs. That is more than enough to haul the family camper or boat to the lake for the weekend or use the Sierra to get your toughest jobs done at work. Along with the engine options and towing power, you’ll also find impressive horsepower, with the base turbocharged 2.7L offering 310 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. The two V8 options push the envelope even further, giving you 355 and 420 hp, respectively.

With all this power and performance, you might think the Sierra would struggle regarding efficiency. However, the EPA estimates for the fifth generation were last calculated at 23 MPG in the city and 30 MPG on the highway, depending on your powertrain selection.

Another perk of the Sierra 1500 that falls under the performance category is its ability to head off-road. While you might not have had this skill on your “must-have” list, it’s good to know you can go wherever you want, whenever you want. It’s worth mentioning as well that while each Sierra 1500 has the power to take the road less traveled, you’ll also find specific trims that are built for the trails. For instance, the AT4 trim level—which debuted in 2020—has a two-inch suspension lift, advanced spool-valve dampers, extra skid plates, off-road tires, and more. Need more off-road prowess? Two years after it debuted, GMC introduced the AT4X, which takes off-road to a whole other level.

Comfort and Convenience

When you think about driving a truck, the first thing that comes to mind probably isn’t comfort. However, great strides have been made in the past few years to help make today’s trucks just as comfortable as any other vehicle on the road. That means that you and the family can both feel at home in the Sierra, even during long road trips. This is especially true as you move up the trim levels, with the top-tier Denali Ultimate offering open-pore wood trim, leather accents, and a 16-way power seat with massage functions. You’ll also enjoy plenty of storage cubbies and a large 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, including a head-up display that gives you real-time information without taking your eyes off the road.

On the convenience side of things, the Sierra offers the MultiPro tailgate, with seven unique functions that make unloading and loading easier than ever before. Whether the Primary Gate Load Stop is engaged to ensure cargo doesn’t slide out of the back of the bed or you lower the Inner Gate to get closer to the floor of the bed, there are a number of ways to make the tailgate work for you. When shopping our inventory, you’ll find the MultiPro tailgate available on certain trim levels, beginning with the 2023 model year. Additionally, the available class-exclusive carbon-fiber-reinforced cargo bed, which debuted in 2019, is built to handle whatever you throw its way.

Finally, advanced technology makes getting to your destination easy thanks to the available 13.4-inch touchscreen that seamlessly connects to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with built-in Google software that makes it simple to find directions and more. Also, when choosing top-tier trim levels, you can enjoy the benefits of hands-free driving. Super Cruise, GMC’s hands-free driving tool, is compatible with tens of thousands of miles of highway all over North America, allowing you to enjoy a more engaging and relaxing drive. The system also comes with advanced features that increase safety and peace of mind.
