The History and Highlights of GMC
GMC has been around for over 100 years, but it wasn't always called "GMC." Like many early days of fast-growing industries, GMC's founder, William C. Durant, wasn't the one to begin the foundation of the GMC automobile, but rather was formed after an acquisition—something Durant was well known for. His first venture into the automotive market was with the purchase of Buick. Eventually, in 1908, he founded the General Motors Company as the company that would oversee the production of the vehicles from its subsidiaries.
Buick and Cadillac were notably two early names in GM's lineup, but one short year after GM's foundation, William C. Durant purchased a little company known as the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company. The Rapid Motor Vehicle Company may not mean anything to you, but it was the difference maker to where we are now because GM would rebrand it as GMC.
Before utilizing the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company moniker, the abbreviation "GMC" was used, though the three letters abbreviated the "Grabowsky Motor Company." The name Grabowsky was given to the company by the Grabowsky brothers—two pioneers in the automotive industry whose legacy remains in the modern-day GMC truck, though millions of drivers are unlikely to recognize their names.
The Grabowsky brothers weren't the only pair of siblings forming car companies around this time; Dodge's origins go back to the early 1900s when it was formed under the working duo of brothers John and Horace Dodge. The early 1900s kicked off the American automotive industry, and GMC was there not only in one form in the beginning, but when General Motors came to fruition, GMC trucks were among those at the forefront of American engineering innovation.
With GMC actively producing vehicles for over 100 years, it's more than likely you know someone who owns a GMC truck—or you may own one and are looking to upgrade to a newer model. GMC trucks are often considered some of the best trucks on the market, and regardless of which model you buy, fans and critics alike have plenty of kind words to say. While GMC has a repertoire of discontinued vehicles—as expected for a manufacturer that's been in business for over a century—the current lineup of GMC trucks is stunning, innovative, and highly sought after.
Trucks aside, GMCs were first in line to the wide craze that became the era of the SUV. GMC's SUVs have been on the market since the early 1990s, and today, its lineup of SUVs is one of the best around. These SUVs are durable and strong, highly performant, and garner legendary status, with the classic Hummer being a fan-favorite, which had a resurgence of sorts with the release of the Hummer EV. The GMC Terrain is a great SUV for practicality mixed with style and versatility. At the same time, the Yukon—especially the Yukon XL—is amazing, with cargo space being a notable highlight, even if nine people are aboard.
